Encyclical on Lourdes

 LePelerinage de Lourdes

Le Pelerinage de Lourdes is the only encyclical of Pope Pius XII issued in French and the only encyclical written on Lourdes. The pope recalled pleasant memories of his pilgrimage to Lourdes which he undertook as Papal delegate at the Eucharistic and Marian Celebrations in 1937. He  reminded the faithful of France, "that every Christian land is a Marian land and that there is not one nation redeemed in the blood of Christ which does not glory in proclaiming Mary its Mother and Patroness”  He then recalls the history of Marian veneration, the history of Lourdes and the contributions of the Popes to her veneration at Lourdes.

It was issued on the centenary of the apparitions of Lourdes from St. Peter's Basilica, on the feast of the Visitation of the Most Holy Virgin, July 2, 1957, the nineteenth year of his Pontificate. The encyclical represents one of the strongest pronouncements of the papal magisterium on Marian apparitions in the history of the Catholic Church. The Pope presents Mary as the model of Christian Life. The school of Mary teaches everybody selflessness and charity.
"In the school of Mary one can learn to live, not only to give Christ to the world, but also to await with faith the hour of Jesus, and to remain with Mary at the foot of the cross.

Wherever providence has placed a person, there is always more to be done for God's cause. Priests should with supernatural confidence, show the narrow road which leads to life. Consecrated and Religious fight under Mary's banner against inordinate lust for freedom, riches, and pleasures. In response to the Immaculate, they will fight with the weapons of prayer and penance and by triumphs of charity. Go to her, you who are crushed by material misery, defenseless against the hardships of life and the indifference of men. Go to her, you who are assailed by sorrows and moral trials. Go to her, beloved invalids and infirm, you who are sincerely welcomed and honoured at Lourdes as the suffering members of our Lord. Go to her and receive peace of heart, strength for your daily duties, joy for the sacrifice you offer."

"O my mother, in your heart
I placed all the anguish of my
heart and it is there that I gain
strength and courage."

  1. Hello Speramus
I don't know why, but I have difficulty getting into your comments. Anyway, I'm in now and I just want to say thanks for this post. It is very interesting. I think your blog is really good. I feel sure Our Blessed Lady is pleased with it too! I have been to Lourdes twice and to Knock, Ireland, once. I would like to go to Fatima too and I hope one day to get there. I'll let you know if I ever make it!

  2. Thanks for commenting I am happy you persevered and finally got in. I hope that there are no more problems for others. I want to do a post on Knock in the future because I believe it also speaks loudly for without any words pointing to our day and the Fatima message of Eucharistic Reparation. So many things to write about and so little time. So we pray a lot asking Our Lady to place these intentions in her heart and to send the Holy Spirit to enlighten and strengthen us as we work with her to prepare for the coming of the Kingdom of God into our hearts and the world. Please do keep in touch. I hope you will make it to Fatima. There is the grace of the place special graces for those who visit particular shrines and churches blessed by God. If we cannot go in person we can make a spiritual visits. The Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI will be there in May maybe you can go then. I was there when Pope John Paul beatified JAcinta and Francesco it was a tremendous experience! I would like to go again butis not God's will for me now so I will go in prayer spiritually. God Bless You!
